FORMER SCC FIRST LADY PASSES

From the President-The Passing of Mrs. Etta Maycock Dudley

It is my sad responsibility to formally share with the constituents of the South Central Conference the passing of the former first lady of our conference, Mrs. Etta Maycock Dudley.

Mrs. Dudley was the widow of the late Elder C.E. Dudley, the fourth President of our conference. Elder Dudley served as President of our conference for 31 years-the longest tenure of any conference president in the history of our church. At the time he assumed office, our conference was small-some 4,000 members and approximately 200,000 in tithe. Under God and the visionary leadership of Elder Dudley, the infrastructure was set in place for conference to grow to over 32,000 members and nearly 19 million dollars in tithe.

South Central is today what it is because of the Lord and because Elder Dudley was who he was. Though it has been 21 years since and 3 Presidents-each of whom, he hired and trained as young Pastors-since he left office, his influence still lives on in our conference.

Through all of those years, Mrs. Dudley was faithfully by his side, traveling with him throughout the conference and the world and serving as the Administrative Assistant to the President and the Shepherdess Director for our conference.

Even as her health began to fail, she was a faithful member of the Riverside Chapel SDA Church in Nashville up until the very end. It was my understanding that she attended church on the final day of her life. She was a fixture at major conference events, such as Camp Meeting.

We thank the Lord for her long and productive life and for her service and ministry to the South Central Conference.

Looking forward to a wonderful family […]

The State of Conference Part V: Equipping Our Workers

Today, our State of the Conference Series continues with the third of the 7 E’s-Equipping Our Workers.

The most important assets in our conference, or, any other conference, are the constituents and the workers.  Without constituents and workers, there is no conference.

It is true that the President’s job is to set a direction and communicate that direction and report on where the conference is going, relative to that direction. But it is the constituents and the workers who are primarily responsible for doing the things that the President communicates and reports.

The next two articles in this series will deal with the things that we are trying to do to equip our workers to provide better service for you. The focus is going to primarily be on the Pastors and the office staff.

There are basically four kinds of workers in the conference: Pastors, Educators, Office Staff and Literature Evangelist. Our discussion will focus on Pastors and the Office Staff – not because the other two are not important – they are.

It is just that my office deals primarily with the hiring and equipping of Pastors and Office Staff. The Office of Education addressing the training of our teachers.  For me to talk about the training of our educational personnel would be to assume an expertise that I do not have.

The Publishing Director, or the FHES Director (Family Home Education Service), Elder Java D. Mattison, is responsible for the recruitment of literature evangelist.  If you are an old Adventist like me; you remember when we used to call them “colporteurs”.

As I have said previously, there are certain things that are a dead giveaway that you are an old Adventist, like me: Knowing what a colporteur is. Remembering […]
