Church Based Minority Health Promotion Programs
The South Central Conference Health Ministries Department is pleased to work with the American Heart Association and American Diabetes Association in sponsoring church based Community Health programs that target minority health issues among African Americans and Latinos such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke and hypertension. Three of the programs currently available are:
Power to End Stroke
Be real. Be strong. Be proud. The power is in your hands to prevent and overcome stroke, and the American Stroke Association is here with information and tools to support you every step of the way.
Search Your Heart
The American Heart Association is working hard to address the disparity between the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and stroke among African Americans and Hispanics/Latinos through a program called Search Your Heart.
Search Your Heart is a faith-based program for heart health and stroke prevention. It is an informative, interactive and fun initiative that helps faith-based organizations reach African Americans and Hispanics/Latinos. Started in 1996, the program now has over 15,000 participating churches across the country.
Project Power
The American Diabetes Association sponsors “Project POWER” to assist churches in integrating diabetes education and healthy living messages into the life of the church. Project POWER brings healthy lifestyle tips and techniques to people with diabetes and those who care for people with diabetes, while celebrating the culture and uniqueness of the “Black Church.”
Latino Diabetes Program
Por tu familia
Diabetes is an urgent health problem in the Latino community. Their rates of diabetes are almost double those of non-Latino whites. Getting information to the community about the seriousness of diabetes, its risk factors and those who may be at risk, and ways to help manage the disease is essential. The American Diabetes Association offers the Port u familia program for Latino churches and communities.
