From The Medical Director...

A fundamental arm of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is it’s health message. Recognizing that one’s body is the Temple of God should encourage a life-style that preserves it’s sanctity by avoiding harmful substances and emphasizing temperance in all things.

Ellen G. White, in Christ’s Object Lessons, reminds us that health is a blessing.  She emphasizes that everyone should have a knowledge of the human body so that it may be kept in a condition necessary to do the work of the Lord.  The physical life is to be carefully preserved and developed that through humanity the divine nature may be revealed in its fullness.

The South Central Conference of SDA has a rich heritage as it relates to healthcare and healthy living.   The Riverside Sanitarium, later to be known as the Riverside Hospital, was a well known institution that adhered to the health principles outlined in the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy.  It’s inception and mission were divinely ordained.  Giants such as Dr. Carl and Lavetta Dent, Dr. George and Lois Benson, Mr. Melvin and Alpheaus  Lightford, Mr. James and Maudie Ward, and others were instruments used by God to carry out this mission.

Oakwood University, a premier institution of the South Central Conference, has prepared hundreds of students for careers in Nursing, Medicine, and other areas of healthcare.

Knowledge regarding the harmful effects of cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs pre-dated that of today’s mainstream medical literature.  They  would later realize that our teachings regarding the importance of fresh air, water, sunshine, exercise, and temperance, was to be emulated.

In collaboration with our Health Department, local and national community health organizations, and other ministries of the Church, the blessings of a healthy life-style will be promoted and realized.

It is my prayer that the Lord will provide the guidance of which we are in so much need.
